How do we dramatically
cut down on greenhouse
gas emissions,
lessen our dependence
on fossil fuels and become
more energy-efficient without
arguably wrecking the
U.S. economy?

So far, no one’s come up
with a viable answer, largely
because we keep looking at
global warming from the
same angle.

The result is
tunnel vision—we keep
missing the forest for the
trees with remedies like
cleaner cars, fewer smokestacks,
more renewable
energy sources. Each is necessary,
but solves only part
of the problem.

What we need is a paradigm
shift in the way we
view energy consumption in
this country. It’s architecture—
residential, commercial
and industrial buildings and their construction
materials—that account for nearly
half of all the energy used in this country
each year. And it’s the architects who hold
the key to turning down the global thermostat.

The government doesn’t recognize this.
The scientific community and public do not
recognize this. The architects themselves
do not recognize this. Why not?

The answer is simple. Most people don’t
understand what architects really do and
most architects don’t have a deep understanding
of the relationship between architecture
and the natural environment.
Missing the Obvious
The biggest problem with the current
thinking on global warming is that solutions
have been focused on areas where
nominal reductions in energy consumption
and emissions can be achieved. For example,
environmental watchdogs and the
media have made sport utility vehicles
(SUVs) the chief villain of the green
movement. But if you took every SUV off
the road tomorrow and replaced them
with hybrids, the impact on global warming
would be minimal.

First, my point of correction: We can't waste the energy! We simple transfer it! Maybe into the air Or into the heat instead of light in our bulbs.

Electricity - can not be lost!! Like a saying, "we lost a lot of electricity ...!"

We simply become inefficient and in some cases; we are irresponsible and inconsiderate - if not uninformed!

We pay for it! Either way!

What is it like to be electric inefficient?

I can only think of one think! Obesity!

We consume energy!!! Electricity in our case!

Then we brag of so much power we have/use!

Few don't even care, how much they pay!!!

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has approved a nominal Eskom power tariff increase of 24,8% as from April 1, 2010, and subsequent increases of 25,8% and 25,9% for 2011/12 and 2012/13 respectively.

Speaking at a Cabinet media briefing, Peters said that the guidelines effectively "capped" municipal tariff increase to around 15% in 2010/11, which would help dampen the effect on residential consumers, if implemented.

She also welcomed the National Energy Regulator's announcement on the "residential inclining block rate tariff structure", which provided a framework for the cross-subsidisation of low-income domestic consumers.

A day earlier, Nersa said that those municipal distributors that implemented the 34% increase in the 2009/10 financial year, a municipal guideline increase of 15,33% had been approved for implementation with effect from July 1, followed by 16,03% from July 1, 2011, and another 16,16 % from July 1, 2012. For those municipal distributors that implemented a different increase, Nersa would consider applications on a case-by-case basis.

A deadline of April 30, 2010, had been set for the submission of municipal tariff applications.

Meanwhile, the new block-tariff mechanism would translate (owing mainly to implementation issues) into a 10,59% reduction in the tariff, to 54,7c/kWh, for households consuming less than 50 kWhs monthly, and a reduction of 5,2%, to 58,48c/kWh, for those consuming between 51 kWhs and 350 kWhs monthly.

The tariff would increase by 5,4% and 5,5% in the 2011/12 and 2012/13 years respectively (rising eventually to 60,83c/kWh) for those in the sub-50-kWh band, and by 13,23% and 13,5% respectively for those consuming between 51 kWhs and 350 kWhs, with the price rising to 75,09c/kWh by the end of the MYPD2 period.

By contrast, households consuming between 351 kWhs and 600 kWhs monthly will face immediate increases of 21,95%, raising the price to 72,35c/kWh in 2010/11, with subsequent yearly increases of 25,8% and 25,9% planned, which would raise the price to 120c/kWh in 2012/13.

Those households consuming more than 601 kWhs monthly would face relatively punitive tariff increases of 35,82% to 83,74c/kWh in 2010/11, followed by increases of 25,8% and 25,9% in 2011/12 and 2012/13, which would raise the price to 132c/kWh by the end of the MYPD2 period.

Under the formula, Nersa allowed Eskom to recover its primary energy and operational costs; costs related to independent power producer (IPP) and cogeneration contracts; depreciation costs a return on assets and demand-side management (DSM).

Nersa allocated R5,4-billion for DSM over the three years, which should partly enable Eskom to roll out a number of its demand-dampening projects, such as solar water heaters.

Over the period, some R12,4-billion was also allocated to Eskom to cover contracts with IPPs and cogenerators.

Energy efficiency and energy saving.

With regular load shedding occurring in South Africa for many years to come, it is essential that we all adopt a more energy efficient behaviour. A great deal of energy is wasted in South Africa. From industries to households, we use more energy than is necessary to fulfil our needs - either because of old and inefficient equipment, or because of bad habits.

What is energy efficiency? Energy efficiency is using electricity more efficiently or in reduced amounts - in other words, doing the same with less. Technically speaking, energy efficiency is an improvement in practices and products that reduces the amount of energy necessary to provide energy services such as lighting, cooling, heating, manufacturing and cooking.

The efficiency of an appliance or technology is determined by the amount of energy needed to provide the energy service. For instance, to light a room with an incandescent (traditional) light bulb of 60 W for one hour requires 60 Wh. A compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) would provide the same light at 11 W and only use 11 Wh. This means that you save 49 Wh for each hour your light is turned on. A compact fluorescent light bulb is therefore over five times more efficient than an old-fashioned incandescent light bulb. The same is true for a linear tube fluorescent light fitting, fitted with electronic control gear. (ECG's)

Why a New Testing Standard Is Needed for LEDs

Traditional light sources (incandescent, fluorescent, and high-intensity discharge) are rated for luminous flux according to established test procedures. In contrast, there is no standard procedure for rating the luminous flux of LED devices. LED light output estimates (as reported on manufacturer datasheets) are typically based on a short (<1 second) pulse of power applied to the LED chip, with junction temperature held at 25 degrees C. This is because LED chips must be binned for luminious flux and color during the manufacturing process. To run them longer without a heat sink would damage them. LED manufacturers usually list "minimum" and "typical" luminous flux on their product datasheets. There is no standardization of the test conditions, or the meaning of "typical." Further, there is no standard test procedure for measuring the luminous flux of LED arrays, such as multiple LEDs mounted on a circuit board.

In summary, luminous flux—and by extension, luminous efficacy—must be measured at the luminaire level for two primary reasons: 1) no standard procedures are available for rating LED devices on their own, and 2) the amount of light emitted by a fixture cannot be predicted reliably based on available information about LED devices and fixtures. The lighting industry has adopted luminaire efficacy as the preferred measure of LED performance, as evident in the development of a new test procedure based on this approach.

How to choose an LED for lighting

With developments made in the efficacy of white LEDs in the past few years, LED technology is driving the future of lighting.

As white light is the main driver for general illumination, there is a particularly strong focus on improving the efficiency of white LEDs, which currently outperform tungsten halogen lamps with efficacies from 45-55lm.

Manufacturing methods have allowed for significant progress to be made in increasing the efficiency of LEDs. Previously, the only way to produce white LED light was by the additive colour mixing of the three basic colours using so-called "multi-LED", ie, three semiconductor chips (red, green and blue LEDs) had to be combined.

Today it is possible to produce white LED light with a single chip.

In luminescence conversion, only a blue LED is used, whose light stimulates a luminescent substance that emits yellow light. With interaction, the system produces the colour white.

White light is generated on the basis of a principle similar to that used in luminescent substance lighting. Depending on the composition of the luminescent substance, various white tones can be realised.
Fine binning for homogeneity

Generally in LED lighting applications more light points are visible next to each other than in applications that employ fluorescent or halogen lamps. The sensitivity in terms of light homogeneity is even bigger as differences between LEDs can be easily identified by the naked eye.

In lighting a corridor, for example, white LEDs might be spaced inches apart to illuminate the walkway and differences in the white light being produced would be very apparent if the LEDs were not from the same sorting grade.

It is now possible to use white LED modules that offer refined quality of white light for applications that demand the highest white colour homogeneity.

The supplier can define the colour coordinates for different sorting grades (binning) within very narrow tolerances. Precisely defined colour coordinates ensure that different LEDs within one white group reliably emit the same homogenous white light, with no visible colour deviations.

LEDs from one particular bin can be used in lighting applications without the need for further checks. Even in critical applications such as diffused or tightly packed light sources they meet stringent requirements in terms of homogeneity. The white tone of an LED is within a range that typically corresponds to a three-step McAdams ellipse.

General illumination

As white LEDs with efficacies from 45-55lm/W already outperform tungsten halogen lamps, general illumination using LED technology is becoming a reality.

In terms of professional lighting, LED luminaires are taking lighting design into a new dimension. With the progress made in white LED technology, the most advanced LEDs are now installed in luminaires that are being developed for general illumination purposes.

A few years ago, LED luminaires were not available as replacement products for halogen lamps used for general illumination, but white LED technology has developed rapidly.

It is now possible to produce a high-power LED with a luminous flux of up to 27lm (100mA/5700k). Not only is it on average 15% brighter than the standard version, it is available in different white tones from 2,700k to 6,500k . This means that different white light colours from warm white to cold white can be achieved and all the requirements from linear lighting applications to strip lighting and surface illumination can be met.

Due to an EU directive calling for the phasing out of products that waste a high amount of energy, conventional tungsten filament lamps will disappear from retail shelves over the next few years and trends within lighting design will have to adapt.

LED technology is already demonstrating itself as a versatile and efficient choice for decorative lighting effects and the scope for using white LEDs for general illumination is enormous through the technological developments that have taken place in recent years.

LEDs are changing the future of lighting and it is estimated that by 2020 LEDs will represent at least one third of the general lighting market.

The EU is phasing out traditional light bulbs over the next three years in favour of a new generation of energy-efficient lighting.

Under new rules coming into force in September, manufacturers and importers can no longer sell clear incandescent light bulbs of 100 watts or above in the EU. However, shops may continue to sell bulbs already in stock.

Part of an effort to save energy and fight climate change, the ban will be expanded in September 2011 and 2012 to include lower wattages of clear incandescent bulbs. Frosted bulbs and high-energy halogen lights are also being phased out.

By 2020 the measures will save enough energy to power 11 million households every year. This will reduce emissions of carbon dioxide by 15 million tons each year.

Introduced 130 years ago, conventional incandescent light bulbs convert only around 5-10% of the energy they use into light; the rest is given off as heat. They are far more wasteful than newer devices like compact fluorescents and low-energy halogens or emerging products such as light-emitting diodes.

The most efficient lights currently on the European market, fluorescent bulbs use 65-80% less energy than incandescent bulbs. But some consumers have been reluctant to switch to them because of concerns about their cost, health impact and aesthetic quality.

Fluorescent bulbs cost more initially but are cheaper in the end because, besides using less energy, they last much longer. The EU estimates that a household can save at least €50 on electricity bills every year by switching to energy-saving bulbs.

Energy commissioner Andris Piebalgs believes consumers will eventually be won over. "Great ideas are sometimes slow to catch on," he writes in a recent blog post. He predicts the ban will spur more improvements in lighting.

To help with the transition, the commission explains the changes in 22 languages on its website.

The regulation covers only non-directional light (light emitted equally in all directions). Similar legislation targeting directional lamps like spotlights is expected to be adopted in 2010.

Russia to ban incandescent lamps from 2014

Russia plans to mirror the steps being taken by the European Union to phase-out inefficient lamps over time.
Russia plans to ban the production and sale of all types of incandescent light bulb from January 1, 2014, according to a Reuters article (author Darya Korsunskaya).
The move, announced by Economy Minister Elvira Nabiullina, is designed to reduce energy consumption, and mirrors a move already under way in the European Union to switch toward less energy-intensive lighting sources.

Nabiullina said that making and selling incandescent bulbs with a power rating of more than 100 watts, which account for about 14 percent of all bulbs used in Russia, would be banned from January 1, 2011.

The ban will include 75 W incandescent lamps starting from January 1, 2013. However, the targets for 2013 and 2014 will not be fixed in law at this stage, but will be determined by the success of the first stage beginning 2011.

The European Union plans to phase out incandescent bulbs by 2012 – see News. Industry bodies have said thousands of jobs in the European Union could be lost, mostly in eastern Europe, as the new regulations favour China-based manufacturers of CFL bulbs.

We met this week, I was asking for XXXXX alternative contacts. And you said you are interested in engaging in electricity cost savings possible. CO2 mitigation business is such a huge market. When I started, in my research and business plan, I took sustainable waste management, small scale renewal electricity(100kW to 1MW per hour), electricity efficiency products, etc. To my surprise! even electricity efficiency was too large for one man-show. I broke electricity efficiency into four segments. Still big, and difficult to enter. I took one segment, broke into into pieces, and I finally pick lighting - LEE. Light Electricity Efficiency. This is how I ended up meeting you this week. I am tasked to relamp Shanduka XXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXX.

We have 125 lamps excluding the corridors. 93 are 1200mm long 36W fluorescent bulbs; 14 1500mm 58W fluorescent bulbs and 18 downlights/incandescents globes. Now, our consumption on lighting only is 1.9MW per month, by relamping, we can achieve at least 50% savings on electricity lighting, and consume only 750kW per month. These are calculations bases on manufactures specifications on lamps. Greater savings can be realised once occupants take extra efforts to be efficient on their lighting usage.

And taking part now, we receive 33% pa on return on investment. The higher the electricity cost, the more money in your pocket.

But the risk of not taking efficient measures, in contrary to savings, you lose 33% on electricity costs.

I have prepared a proposal to re lamp the whole building with the support of Mr. Lavendra Naidoo @Business Place (one floor down from us). He promise to pressurise the property owner for support in relamping and other money saving electricity efficient projects.

But that should not stop us! Now, I wish to ask who do I send a quotation, projected cost savings from electricity by relamping, purchase order for the lamps and other related information?

Is efficient sufficient?

Physical limits in the atmosphere's ability to absorb additional greenhouse gas emissions without causing fundamental changes in the earth's climate lend a new urgency to efforts to reduce energy consumption. Central to those efforts is the art of defining, testing, and specifying the energy efficiency of particular products such as appliances, televisions, homes and vehicles that account for the majority of consumer energy use.

Thus far, most governments have defined energy efficiency in a way that allows power consumption or annual energy use to rise steadily (and typically linearly) with product performance, size, amenity, or functionality. but not South African government! This helps consumers locate the least consumptive among a range of similar products, but does little to prevent absolute energy consumption from rising over time as products naturally migrate toward higher performance, larger size, and greater amenity and functionality. We have slowed the rate of growth compared to a business-as-usual scenario, but have not consistently turned absolute energy consumption or greenhouse gas emissions downward. Yet the capacity to do so clearly exists; we can do better.

Given the steady growth in population and affluence, technology has been ineffective, by itself, in stemming that tide. Examples from past efforts in overseas, like Europe and the United States to improve the efficiency of refrigerators, vehicles, and homes illustrate why present approaches to defining, encouraging, and regulating particular levels of efficiency are no longer achieving the energy savings we need.

What is needed instead is a more comprehensive view of the range of factors at work, so that more product attributes can be specified than merely efficiency, and so that the efficiency specifications themselves can be tailored to be more effective.

In turn, this prompts consideration of overall sufficiency limits on total annual energy use or greenhouse gas emissions from a particular product type, regardless of its size or performance.

Progressive efficiency standards alone will not be enough to turn down energy consumption, however. A range of changes are required in the way voluntary and mandatory efficiency policies and programs are implemented to systematically implement sufficiency and progressive efficiency concepts, keep specifications up to date, and discourage excessive consumption through price and information signals. Long term, such profound changes are our only hope for reversing the extraordinary global risks of climate change.

Save energy! President Zuma urges you!

Thinking they are protecting their profits, the stakeholders of the so-called ‘energy-efficient’ compact fluorescent lights, (CFL) and linear fluorescent bulbs are going all the way and destroying our precious planet, by insisting on their obsolete lighting solutions. Worst – built environment managers, such as commercial property owners, facility managers, lighting engineers, South African’ Department of Public Enterprise are dancing to this awful song!

I was expecting AM EU or EC SA (Engineering Council of SA) or any electricity/luminaries association or at least local government would play a leading role in pioneering innovative, clean technology – I was dismally wrong. Now I wonder if big perpetrators are the ones funding these associations, and indirectly causing the association to loose the very essence of their existence! Or, are the principal/platinum members of these luminaires/light desiners/light engineers are the very manufactures and supplier of incandescent bulbs and flourescent bulbs? How do you expect change in electric light efficiency?

Read below: “President Jacob Zuma has called on South Africans to save energy in an effort to avoid the load-shedding that plunged the country into darkness in 2007 and 2008.

In its efforts to save the limited resource, Government is embarking on an initiative to implement the use of alternative forms of energy - cheaper and cleaner forms which saves money and the environment”. . . . "We took energy for granted. Things have changed drastically. You will recall that the period 2007 and 2008 saw a number of noticeable disruptions in the electricity supply. Large sections of the country were plunged into darkness as a result of Eskom not being able to meet the electricity demand nationwide," he said.

Question remains – Will the commercial electricity users try to be electric light efficient or will the Government do what they do best, - speeches, meetings, seminars, speeches, meetings, travel overseas to explore new technologies, speeches, meetings!

In South Africa most electricity is generated by coal-fired power stations. Although everything technically possible is done to reduce emissions into the atmosphere, greenhouse and other gases are still released into the air. Efficient use of electricity reduces these emissions, promotes sustainable use of energy resources and brings down electricity costs.

In simple terms, every kilowatt-hour of electricity saved means that one less kilogram of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. The result is better quality of life for all.

Why South Africa must always lag behind other developing and developed countries?” LED tubes were employed in Europe for the last 5 years, initiated by likes of Osram, and other light bulb manufactures. And they were overtaken by Japan and China in technology innovation and quality.

Property owners and facility managers rely on what their existing light product suppliers says. Even if they insist on obsolete compact and linear fluorescent bulbs.

However, I believe, if the market (especial consumers) can be educated – they would make better decision and retrofit quality, efficient LED tubes and LED down lighters.

I wish, companies who signed the Energy efficient Accord would learn more from leading efficient countries, before invest on already outdated light bulbs – Our LED tubes here be here for the next century. Let me say, we will give the lowest price possible, since we have no large overheads.

Attached is a picture of LED tube.

Do you have any advice for me. We import Led tubes from Tokyo (for capacity, technology, strategic and financial reasons). All developing nations have been installing LED tubes for the last 5 years. Our manufacture meets all European and American bureau of standards. Our dearly loved and trusted SABS, does not have directive specifications on Led tubes – this is officially. Our Led's and some others have been found to be ultra efficient and set to replace/ retrofit all fluorescent bulbs - (linear or compact).

But this ultimate efficient bulb has met some resistance from incandescent globe manufacturers. They have a association of large number, and the government and Eskom seems to believe their story, than that of leading international luminaries' expects from developed countries.

Since the ministry of energy joined REEEP, should they be advised on the matter. In few occasions, our South African government sought your input in energy security. There is no association or regulatory body on LED tubes or commercial application LED lights locally. Internationally there is plenty! Beka, UniLux and PowerTech are coming out with propaganda against "international trusted" imports of electricity efficient LED tubes.

I could say more, I wish to pause here – where possible acknowledge the receipt and a way forward please!
